Yorkshire’s PRs come out for strikers

Striking journalists have been joined by public relations colleagues as they fight redundancies at Yorkshire Post Newspapers.

Egged on by the twittering of Wolfstar MD Stuart Bruce at least three PR firms have lent support.

The NUJ is running an imaginative campaign with videos on YouTube (including a specially composed campaign song from local band the The Shakinouts), and a Facebook group supplementing the traditional picket line.

Media relations will always form the bulk of bread and butter public relations work, whether that media is new, old or social and so the PR industry depends on a vibrant professional media. It’s important to stand shoulder to shoulder with journalists at times like these.

The Johnston Press, which owns the Yorkshire Post, is fighting back with copy bought from the Press Association. That takes local news out of the hands of local journalists and detaches the newspaper from its public. That can only damage the titles’ credibility with the communities they serve and expedite their decline.

The Yorkshire Post should be Yorkshire through and through.
