A user-generated BBC… no thanks!

Steve Bowbrick has made great use of the privileged access the BBC has granted him to provide some great insights into the way the BBC is facing up to the challenges of social media over at Common Platform, most recently detailing a couple of Radio 1’s efforts to become more interactive.

All good stuff says Steve: ‘But, let’s face it, they were both editorial wheezes… they did nothing to expose underlying processes, to genuinely involve outsiders or to share resources and assets.’

But do we really want the a genuinely user-generated BBC? I reckon anyone who’s seen an edition of X-Factor would say no. There are an awful lot of people who think they’ve some great TV in them (together with a novel, film and some contemporary art), but simply haven’t.

Great art tends to come from maverick individuals rather than by wide consensus.
