themanchesterpaper…? Don’t get excited

That News International has registered themanchesterpaper domain names means very little I suspect. After all, they’ve registered thebirminghampaper, thebristolpaper, thehullpaper, theleedspaper, theyorkpaper, theedinburghpaper, theglasgowpaper, thecardiffpaper, theliverpoolpaper and maybe more as well.

It makes good sense to buy up names like this, just in case someone else tries to publish something that looks like a sister to the paper you’ve invested so much in. It only costs around £5 to register a .co.uk for a couple of years. The Guardian Media Group’s local monopoly may be loosening, but I doubt it has anything to worry about… yet.
