Public relations should campaign to keep FoI free

It will always be difficult to convince the cynical that good public relations is about being open and honest rather than the effective suppression of unwelcome news. And it’s often an uphill battle to convince the purchasers of public relations services that being open – even (perhaps especially) when they’ve got it wrong – is the secret of good reputation management.

Those working in the public sector are helped by the Freedom of Information Act, which promises to bring about a cultural shift by making openness an obligation. But it’s under threat. The same government that brought in the Act is considering undoing some of that good work by introducing fees.

The cross party campaign to keep freedom of information free, which is gaining momentum among bloggers, is an opportunity for public relations to demonstrate a commitment to openness.
