Public relations pitches to bloggers
This morning a ‘fellow Mancunian’ offered me a nice photo for my Diary of sorts… taken at an event last week that I may well have been interested in, which was nice. Indeed, it’s always nice to hear from readers, blogging is a fairly egoistical pastime after all.
The thing is, this was no ordinary reader but a public relations consultant, working out of a firm that shall remain nameless, looking to get their client some bloggy column inches. There is certainly no shame in handling public relations for the client in question; so why pitch the tip as coming from a ‘fellow Mancunian’?
It was clumsy too. I can’t imagine sending a similar email from ‘executive@pr-consultant.co.uk’ and not expecting bloggers to check out www.pr-consultant.co.uk or to Google me.
As it happens I’m very open to the idea of PRs inviting me to events and suchlike. Chances are that I will blog on such things if I take the time to turn up (although that’s not guaranteed and if it’s rubbish, I’ll say so). It’s also good to see public relations professionals attempting to engage with blogs, so I won’t cruelly name and shame this lot who have some really cuddly people on their books.
But some bloggers are funny beasts who, like some journalists only more so, imagine public relations to be a dark art. How they’d love to hype-up this apparent subterfuge and place themselves at the centre of some storm in a teacup.
