Profile Extra from the CIPR
The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) has just launched its first online magazine, Profile Extra. It’s a little light on content at the moment, but I guess that’s fair enough. Currently online is a rather dry writing tips feature by John Foster, author of Effective Writing Skills for Public Relations. The dryness is a great shame because his column is usually more than readable, but more embarrassingly there’s a typo in the title of his book. The database of case studies that’s emerging may also be interesting and I can imagine myself reading it from time to time.
Nevertheless, I feel a ‘but’ coming on. The whole thing looks a little dated already and I can’t help wondering why they haven’t gone for a blog and, more importantly, why there aren’t any RSS feeds.

Feedback from members and non-members is very valuable to us. It helps us as we continue to develope Profile Extra (www.profile-extra.co.uk) in the future. It’s a brand new site and there are still many ideas and features we would like to implement, one of them being an RSS feed and an online message board. At the moment we were not able to do so, due to budget constraints.
The blog format is not something we felt appropriate for Profile Extra. We wanted an online magazine with a magazine feel. The printed magazine is published every second month – six times per year – and we needed something that could create a continuous presence, which would also add value to those who take out CIPR membership. For the first time we are able to provide readers with an almost complete archive of Profile articles since the start in 2000. This is a huge resource for those wanting to research the industry and the issues and challenges it’s faced over the past five years.
In our view, colours and design are often a matter of taste, but we certainly take Stephen’s comments into consideration.
We hope that every one with an interest – personal or professional – in public relations, will continue to follow the developments on Profile Extra http://www.profile-extra.co.uk.
Many thanks.
