Press releases & adding value to news

It’s still true that press releases aren’t news just because I say so, but the news that punters are cutting out the media middle man – discussed at Pop PR – and reading press releases themselves is worth noting. Some prefer to read a press release than a news article.

It’s certainly true that there are times when the media adds little value to a story; take this case involving the British Cheese Board and the Daily Mail.

But media old and new (including blogs) need to concentrate on how they (we?) add value to stories. It’s not enough to simply print a press release, when readers can go to the source or just quote from a newspaper website they can visit just as easily as you.
