Peter Kay’s winner’s song… I don’t get it

A public relations consultant needs to stay on top of the zeitgeist, but I do struggle to find enthusiasm for TV talent shows, like X Factor.

That said, I very much enjoyed Peter Kay’s spoof. I can see why others thought it over the top, but segueing from Free Nelson Mandela to Rihanna’s Umbrella, summed up just how vacuous it all is.

And in truth the music produced by these shows always falls flat. Winners’ careers quickly peter out because their music is not of the spirit of the age. Leona Lewis can sing, but songs don’t get any more mediocre than awful ballads, packed with nonsense lyrics, like Bleeding Love.

Yet what I don’t understand is why more people are rushing out to buy Peter Kay’s The Winner’s Song than the real thing. It’s good spoof, but is only funny in the context of the show.
