Opportunistic public relations: National Autistic Society & George Osborne

‘George Osborne doesn’t seem to have noticed that most people over the age of eight no longer use serious and distressing disabilities as a way of taunting people.’
Nick Hornby

Hats off to the National Autistic Society for penalising shadow chancellor George Osbourne over his using ‘autistic’ as an insult.

That he intended his throwaway remark as a little joke, isn’t really the point. Nor can the charity be accused of taking advantage of a young inexperienced party spokesperson for its own ends.

Public relations professionals need to be ready to take advantage of sudden and surprising opportunities to get their message into the public domain. The Society’s quick reaction to the news, supported by best selling author Nick Hornby and others, has ensured an opportunity to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by those affected by autism has been fully exploited.
