Teenage Twitter expert should be read with caution

A research note written by a fifteen-year-old that rubbishes Twitter has caused a stir in the city, but should probably be approached with caution.

Matthew Robson is clearly an intelligent and articulate young man, but it’s worth bearing in mind that teenagers tend to live in bubbles. When Robson says teenagers don’t use Twitter it may well be that he doesn’t know any that do, but that’s a so what. Or he may be discounting the geeky kids he doesn’t hang around with.

When I was fifteen, in 1984, ‘nobody’ listened to the Smiths… except a couple of weirdoes.

Today, we also hear that ‘everybody’ is using last.fm to avoid annoying radio ads. Radio ads are abysmal, but it is also true that people like listening to Chris Moyles who can go for a full half hour without playing a single record.

Matthew Robson almost certainly does represent a segment of today’s teenagers. But how significant a segment is difficult to gauge. And who knows what they’ll be into next week?

Good points. I know a number of teenagers who are on Twitter, actually, though by no means very many.
