Inspired by WAGs: read the press release
‘“Wags” are an “excellent example” to youngsters, having achieved at least five good GCSEs, Government officials have said.’
– ITN
Despite what those of us backing the Stand Up for Journalism campaign might think, there may be times when journalists really should just print the press release.
ITN seem to have got all confused after PRs at the Learning & Skills Council offered them an angle on WAGs and the need to have qualifications. The press release, entitled ‘WAG wannabes told to get grades’, tries to point out that while footballers’ wives and girlfriends may not appear too bright, most did okay at school and so have something to fall back on. Young girls should follow their example and get some GCSEs before toddling off to the local nightclub to pull a footie star.
Unfortunately, that’s turned into ‘Wags are “inspirational” says Government’ which isn’t the same the thing at all… if only the overworked hacks had managed to find the time to read the press release.

Stephen,
GCSEs and all the grade inflation is one big shameless bit of spin.
Every generation has academic children and those that are not. Let’s accept that and if not academic offer traineeships and apprenticeships.
Now, the high water mark of education is not 5 GCSEs
As for WAGs, I doubt many footballers are going to interview their latest squeeze by asking about their GCSEs
Nobody is going to buy this latest release.
Why cannot we stop having things watered down and get real: If you study and achieve you are more likely to get a job you want and one that will pay more
Why in this country are so many children not interested in what is in many countries a privilege? Not amount of PR fluff can answer that.
