Amnesty to build on Irrepressible.info with blogger army
Building on the success of Irrepressible.info (its joint campaign with the Observer to republish snippets from texts banned by oppressive regimes on blogs as part of a ‘they can’t ban us all’ protest) Amnesty International is recruiting for a E-Action Task Force (EATF).
The aim is to encourage more of us to blog on human rights issues, by giving those who pledge to do so a heads-up on upcoming initiatives. This kicks off with a chance to download a pamphlet on the ethics of torture.
Engaging bloggers is a difficult trick to pull off. Nobody likes to be told what to write and it will be interesting to see how many essays on torture find their way to publication. I suspect Amnesty may have more luck pushing out stories that simply don’t win headlines in the media. Each individual prisoner of conscience is a story that is hardly told; a story a group of bloggers could make their own and getting blogs to adopt prisoners would create a greater sense of involvement.
