XFM Manchester to close
The news that XFM Manchester will probably close next month will be of little surprise to those of us who have tried listening. Many others on the media scene are surprised, citing the stations important role in nurturing local talent and the speed with which it established itself in hearts and minds.
But sadly, the daytime schedule, which should generate the cash to pay for a little risk taking, was abandoned sometime ago. Station managers took the ludicrous step of leaving 10am to 4pm DJ free, instead there is Xu – Radio To The Power Of U. Here all too ordinary listeners pick the tunes and introduce them in an ‘em, err, I like this ’cos it reminds me of going out on the piss’ style. The last time I listened on the weekend, the news reader was introducing highlights of exclusive live recordings from the last couple of years without any flair and not a single anecdote between the tracks, just ‘it was great to have Keane in the studio’. It was tragic.
That is to say XFM has been starved of investment… and oh yeah… they play far too much Emo in a sad attempt to attract the youngsters.
