Human rights failings floor luxury brands
The diamond industry has been left fuming after being slated in WWF’s Deeper Luxury report which graded the top ten luxury brand owners by their own corporate social responsibility criteria and NGO and media perceptions.
WWF recognises a number of responsible mining initiatives, but clearly still feels the industry has a long way to go. Blood or conflict diamonds, for example, remain a significant issue for the industry and it will be difficult for the diamond trade to earn a reputation for corporate social responsibility before that trade has been extinguished.
WWF’s action plan is a good guide for those corporations beginning to take social responsibility seriously, while its star charter should be adopted by all in the celebrity endorsement business.

Check out also Authentic Luxury Network at http://www.authenticluxury.net. It brings together executives, designers, analysts and entrepreneurs who want to lead the creation of more sustainable and ethical luxury.
And for the proposal for responsible brand endorsement through a Star Charter, see http://www.starcharter.net. It gives an update on celebrity reaction to WWF’s Deeper Luxury report.
