Wilkinson Sword public relations team: wake up!
Over on the other side I’ve been poking fun at Wilkinson Sword’s rather bizarre advertising, which reminded me of this Observer magazine feature on the shaving industry’s innovators. It’s a wonderful puff piece for Gillette, who enjoy a 74 per cent share of the market… ‘Wilkinson Sword declined to participate in this article’.
Why or why oh why? It makes you wonder if the public relations team at Wilkinson Sword has lost the will to live. Sure there’s a little mickey taking at manufacturers’ tendency to add a couple of blades on their razors every few years, but a big soft feature in a Sunday supplement is the kind of exposure most sensible consumer goods manufacturers would die for.
As it is, if I understand Wilkinson Sword’s ads right, they’re bowing out of the multiple blades war to concentrate on precision styling. A smart move I reckon. And something that would have gone down well in this puff piece that they left to Gillette.

I have a box of 7 cut throats with the emblem, sharper than the sword. I am interested in the history of these blades.
