Chris Paul, one of Manchester’s best known political bloggers is a little cynical about local councillor Pat Karney’s popularity with the local press. Manchester Evening News political editor, David Ottewell explains all: Pat Karney is always available. He’s got a nice standard quote that can be adapted for any situation and, even better, a key message – ‘Manchester is world class city and…’ – that he works into every situation.
Good for Pat. This really is the secret to becoming a spokesperson for your industry. Speak out regularly, with short snappy soundbites on the issues of the day and journalists will come to see you as someone who’s good for a quote. Give it a while, but not too long, and next time a deadline’s pending they’ll come to you. Just make sure that, like Pat, you’ve got that key message bottomed out and are always just a phone call away.
