SEO copywriting: Scientists save the pun
‘A headline has to work on two levels – it has to have humour and it has to make a point.’
– Kelvin Mackenzie, legendary Sun editor.
The golden rule of writing for the internet – assuming you want your pages to show up in search engine results – is to keep it simple and descriptive because the machines that read and index the web have no sense of humour. That means no more puns.
But reports of the death of the pun may be exaggerated.
Boffins at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio have created the first bot to recognise simple puns. Incorporated into search technology, like Google, it could reduce the need for those writing for the internet to stick to simple descriptive, keyword heavy headlines.
