BBC’s business coverage failing
Having been previously moved to note the BBC’s abysmal coverage of business there’s little surprise that the BBC Trust has found the corporation’s coverage to be unbalanced.
What comes through is a tendency to see the audience merely as consumers, forgetting that they are much more than that – employees, employers, shareholders, pensioners – and that the audience may sometimes be capable of looking beyond its own self interest. Examples of failure include a Money Programme on fair trade, which struggled to look beyond the price premium and refused the opportunity to interview a farmer from the developing world.
The emphasis on a narrow consumer perspective also renders this BBC unable to identify with workers. Here in the North West, it’s notable that the BBC has failed to notice the merger of United Co-op and the Co-operative Group, which will be the world’s largest consumer co-operative, turning over £10bn.
