Avon’s Dead Sea Detox Patches… time to learn from Boots experience
Last month I suggested that the public relations industry shouldn’t push unproven medicines upsetting at least one user of such a medicine to such an extent that another ethical dilemma has appeared… should I persuade him that the pills he’s been popping are placebos, might his depression return?
In the meantime, the Advertising Standards Authority, who recently made a wrong decision regarding a complaint made by my wife, appear to have got it right with regard to Avon’s Dead Sea Detox Patches which, once placed on your feet, said Avon’s packaging, catch toxins and purify the body. Needless to say, they could not provide sufficient evidence to support the claim.
Yet at the same time Boots, having taken the risk of testing a face cream and finding that it works better than a placebo, has provoked a stampede and continues to reap the rewards.
All of which is evidence that there’s profit (as well as the warm feeling that comes from doing the right thing) in honesty.
