Lowry weighs in on BBC debate
The most important event for Manchester’s media scene since the BBC bought the Mancunian Film Company’s studio in Rusholme in 1954 (its first regional presence) is looking increasingly real.
Recent years have witnessed the simultaneous wind down of the BBC’s Manchester assets and ITV Granada, but all that is – hopefully – about to be reversed with the relocation of eight of major departments to Manchester or Salford. It’s down to two locations and the good news is the idea of joint BBC/ITV complex is almost certainly dead: let’s have some healthy rivalry and competition, rather than cosy collaboration.
If I were a BBC worker, I’d probably prefer to be in Manchester, walking distance from the existing site and with all the city centre has to offer on my doorstep. Despite its fantastic contemporary architecture, Salford Quays remains a rather soulless place to live or work. But the Lowry makes a compelling case (although I’m not convinced about the ‘Kids armed with mobile phones… demonstrating… a wealth of talent’ thing, I thought they were happy slappers).
