Internet tracking … not as daunting as it seems
Fellow PR guru Steve Bruce reports that the Oldham Chronicle’s MD’s become a figure of fun. The poor man’s been visiting national newspaper websites every day and searching for mentions of Oldham.
The amusement comes not from his worthy desire to keep on top of how his town’s presented online. It’s that this is an inefficient and time consuming way to monitor the web and you don’t even get to see the tip of the iceberg. The best way to monitor the online editions of the national press is via their RSS feeds, which are all listed here, along with selected feeds from the BBC. Look: Aunty Beeb’s RSS crazy. If you don’t know what RSS is, let the BBC take you through it.
The bottom line is that had the man from the Oldham Chronicle got himself a feed reader, he’d be notified every time a national mentioned Oldham, within minutes and for free. Not only that, he could subscribe to this and receive notification each time a blogger mentioned Oldham, usually within minutes and for free. And there’s more… but that’s enough for now.
