Corporate social responsibility needs defining in law: Bill Gates

‘Germany bans Nazi hate speech – the US clearly constitutionally protects that. Should I do business in Germany?’
Bill Gates

It’s alarming to hear the chairman of one of the word’s most powerful corporations – and one at the forefront of dealing with China – talking in such simplistic terms on the difficulties of trading responsibly in countries with poor human rights records. In an interview in the Financial Times, Gates appears quite passive on the issue: ‘people like ourselves are glad to go along with whatever reasonable things get laid down’.

It’s a shame Microsoft feels unable to map out corporate responsibilities for itself.
