City Life to close… as Guardian Media Group downsizes

Manchester listings magazine City Life, which is to close on 7 December, is the highest profile casualty of cut backs at the Guardian Media Group (GMG), which Media Guardian (part of GMG) suggests have to pay for the Guardian’s move to the Berliner format.

The Manchester Evening News (MEN) is silent on the subject (although the business section is dominated by Daily Mail & General Trust’s proposed sale of Northcliffe). The bulk of the 48 job losses will be from the MEN’s marketing, advertising, facilities management and digital businesses.

This makes very little sense. While the MEN digital offering won best daily newspaper internet site in 2001, it’s truly awful; slow and crammed full of pop-up ads that make every visit a chore. More importantly, the newspaper’s failure to stay on top of the game can only be costly in the long run. Meanwhile, reducing the marketing capacity is unlikely to help reverse declining sales.
